Thornton le Dale History Society
Welcome to the History Society
The Society was formed in May 2013 for people interested in the history of Thornton le Dale and the surrounding area. You are very welcome to join the Society or to attend our meetings as a visitor (£2.50 fee). There is a wide range of interests and expertise within the group and enthusiasm for investigating various aspects of the history of Thornton le Dale.
We usually meet in The Hill Memorial Institute on the last Wednesday of each month at 7.30 p.m. but please check individual dates and meeting times. Do come along to a meeting and join us.
The next meeting of the Society was to be on Wednesday, 29th April at 7.30 p.m, but infortunately it has had to be cancelled due to the ongoing situation with Coronavirus. Hopefully this can be re-arranged later in the year.
We will announce the situation regarding the May AGM as the situation develops.

A Village Through Time
A group of members is working on a project 'Thornton le Dale: a Village through Time'. We are collecting information about buildings in the village and tracing the people who lived there over the years. Please keep an eye on the site for documents to download. The documents below are transcriptions showing people who rented property in the village from the Hill estate in 1740/41 and a document showing Hill estate tenants between 1800 and 1811. There are also transcriptions of two different illuminated addresses to the Rev John and Mrs Hill in 1861 and 1892, listing tenants of the Hill estate.
